The Earl Shilton Camera Club Competition Rules

The Earl Shilton Camera Club hols internal competitions and participates in competitions with other clubs. The purpose of these competitions is to foster the development of photographic skills. To this end, members are encouraged to shoot new images for competitions, rather than raiding the archives for something that fits the brief.

1. Photographer of the Year

  • a) The title of Photographer of the Year is awarded to the photographer who scores the most points in internal print and projected image competitions.
  • b) The "Image of the Year" competition does not count towards the "Photographer of the Year" award.

2. Image of the Year

  • a) An externally judged competition, members are asked to submit a mounted print of what they consider to be their best image of the year.
  • b) This image should have been taken during the preceding 18 months.
  • c) Members may submit any image they wish, irrespective of whether or not it has been submitted to other competitions during the year with the exception that the image must not have been submitted to previous "Image of the Year" competitions.
  • d) All submitted prints must have a club sticker on the rear, giving the image Author, Title and date of submission.

3. Print Competitions

  • a) Members may enter up to three prints per competition.
  • b) Entries for print competitions should be mounted. Mount sizes must not be greater than 20x16 inches.
  • c) Entries should be marked on the rear with the author's name and image title.
  • d) Where desired, the image title may be displayed on the front of the mount.
  • e) Authors are requested to submit a digital copy of images for inclusion on the club website, where such digital copies exist.

4. Projected Image Competitions

  • a) Members may submit yp to three images per competition.
  • b) Images for projected image competitions must be submitted by the submission date given in the club's programme of events.
  • c) Images received after the submission date will not be included in the competition.
  • d) Images may be submitted on CD, Memory Stick, Memory Card or by email to the competition secretary.
  • e) The standards for projected image competitions are likely to evolve with time and the club rules shall followthe latest available guidance from the PAGB.
  • f) The currently specified standards for projected image competitions are:
    • i. File type: JPEG
    • ii. Colour space: sRGB
    • iii. Maximum file size: No specification
    • iv. Maximum image size: 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels high. NOTE: Portrait format images should be no more than 769 pixels high - this is a projector limitation.
    • v. Resolution: 72dpi - this is a projector limitation.
    • vi. Filename: Should be the image title only, which must not start with a numeric character. The author's name should not form part of the filename. The competition secretary will add a two-digit number to the front of the filename in order to simplify slideshow production.
  • g) Where images are submitted that do not conform to these specifications, the competition secretary will adjust the image accordingly. Members should note that although every endeavour will be taken to preserve image quality this may be adversely impacted by such adjustments and therefore members are strongly advised to ensure the images they submit are compliant.
  • h) Unless otherwise requested, digital images submitted will be used on the club's website.

5. Panel Competitions

  • a) Members may submit one panel per competition.
  • b) A panel consists of two or more images mounted on a single mount.
  • c) Mount size should not exceed A1.
  • d) Entries should be marked on the rear with the author's name and the panel's title.
  • e) Where desired, the panel and/or image titles may be displayed on the front on the mount.
  • f) Authors are requested to submit a digital copy of the images on the panel, for inclusion on the club website, where such digital copies exist.

6. Conduct of Internal Competitions

  • a) Internal competitions shall be marked by peer-voting.
  • b) Each member or visitor present at a club competition shall be entitled to vote.
  • c) The competition secretary shall be responsible for ensuring that all persons present have a voting slip.
  • d) Each member or visitor shall mark on the voting slip the allocated "image number" against 1st, 2dn or 3rd place as appropriate.
  • e) For print competitions, the entries shall be displayed in the meeting room.
  • f) The competition secretary shall be responsible for ensuring that each print has an "Image Number" placed on it.
  • g) For Projected Image competitions, the competition secretary shall compile a slideshow of the submitted entries. Images from any given author in the slideshow shall be randomly distributed and may or may not be shown in the order submitted.
  • h) The competition secretary shall randomly allocate a two-digit number to each projected image filename so that the slideshow order is repeatable but randomised by entry.
  • i) The slideshow shall have a fixed display time for each image, which shall be the same for all images.
  • j) The slideshow shall be projected three times.
  • k) The image number and title shall be announced for each image as it is displayed.
  • l) After the allocated viewing time, the competition secretary shall ensure that all voting slips are collected.
  • m) The competition secretary and an assistant shall transfer the votes cast to the "Autoscoresheet" spreadsheet.
  • n) For each 1st place vote, the "Autoscoresheet" shall allocate 5 points.
  • o) For each 2nd place vote, the "Autoscoresheet" shall allocate 3 points.
  • p) For each 3rd place vote, the "Autoscoresheet" shall allocate 2 points.
  • q) The "Autoscoresheet" shall tally all votes cast and the overall 1st, 2nd and 3rd place entries shall be determined from such tally.
  • r) Points from all votes cast shall be transferred to the "Photographer of the Year" tracking spreadsheet.
  • s) The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place entries shall be displayed in reverse order and member critique given.
  • t) The remaining entries shall then be displayed in no particular order for member critique.

7. External Competitions

  • a) External competitions shall be conducted in accordance with the rules agreed between the participating club(s) and the Earl Shilton Camera Club.
  • b) Entries for such competitions shall be selected by peer-voting on designated "selection nights".
  • c) Members shoud not submit for consideration images that have already been entered into competitions against the club(s) concerned.
  • d) Entries for external print competitions shall have a club sticker attached to the rear of the image bearing the following information.
    • i. Author's name
    • ii. Image title
    • iii. Competition entered
    • iv. Date
  • e) Entries for external projected image competitions shall have the author's name, filename, file size, date and competition entered, recorded for future reference. Such data shall be held for no more than fice years.

8. Monochrome

  • a) For the purposes of ESCC competitions, Monochrome shall be defined as the paper colour plus one other tone.
  • b) Selectively toned images shall be considered to be colour images.
  • c) This definition shall apply to all media types (print, slide, projected digital)
